Watch Us on Channel 4 Superfoods - the real story

The producers of the Food Unwrapped programme were launching a new series investigating many different types of foods and the claims associated with them for the beneficial properties, and then conducting their own analysis to see if the claims were valid.

When the producers contacted us in 2014 they were asking us all about kefir, how we made it and what we were doing in South Croydon.  They were surprised that a company in South Croydon was making real kefir.  And very excited to tell us about series looking into 'superfoods' they invited us to take part.

Similarly we were very excited about the programme and invited Kate Quilton and the TV crew to come and spend the day with us.  They arrived early before production began and we talked them through the stages of kefir grains fermentation - to bottling up and labelling the kefir!  It was fun for us and they were really enthusiastic about what were doing.  Here's a link to Channel 4's Superfoods series website.

As far as we were concerned we knew our kefir would stand up to their tests.  For Deborah her personal testimony of recovery from the painful symptoms of Crohn's disease through drinking kefir was proof enough that this special fermented milk drink could be considered a superfood.

The producers were very interested to know about how kefir had helped Deborah recover from the symptoms of Crohn's to be in remission without the need for medication.  If you get a chance to re-watch that episode it's really interesting.  It shows a video of what an intestines affected with crohn's actually looks like on the inside!

Deborah had suffered with symptoms of IBS and then Crohn's for 10 years before she found kefir.  She was keen to tell her story with the hope that this natural product could really make a difference to other people suffering with gut problems, just as it had done for her.

We hope you got to watch us on Channel 4's Superfoods programme.  If you have any questions or comments about kefir please get in touch

Channel 4 Superfoods presenter Kate Quilton took part in tests of her gut mircro-biome and Nourish Kefir. Samples were sent to UK laboratories where the kefir was tested in a simulation gut to see if it would survive the conditions of a stomach to reach the intestines still viable.
The scientist revealed that at least 40% of the bacteria from the kefir had survived the stomach acid to reach the intestinal tract where it can get to work. As producers of kefir made from live kefir grains we are very excited with that result.
